The story About Lombok Island – the next island of Bali

In the 17th century, The Karangasem King (East of Bali) invaded Lombok which was becoming a very important moment for the island. In  Cakranegara, the economic center of the island, 90% occupied by Balinese and the culture is just same as Bali, there are few temples in the area, Pura Meru, Mayura  which was built on 17th century.

Another temple in the area,  Taman Namada, built 1727 by Anak Agung Gde Ngurah Karangasem as both a recreational garden and a place to Shiwa. But despite the influence of Hindu, Lombok is essentially a Muslim island. Moslem came all the way from Java, Sulawesi and they were landed by the ocean, it signed more people who lives by the beach are fisherman with the floating house which is characteristic of Sulawesi (Makasar – Bugis).

The area is no less varied geographically. The Nusa Tenggara islands are the most varied in Indonesia with the landscape ranges from Lombok’s volcanoes to Sumba’s and Flores’ dry Savannah. There are also colorful atolls in many part of the region.

Lombok island is where the transition towards eastern Indonesia begins, both naturally and culturally. The northern part of Lombok is mountainous and verdant with tall trees and shrubs covering the land. The western part of the island is the greenest and most humid. Moving to the east, the dry season become more pronounced, where in many areas corn and sago are becoming the main food instead of rice.

Lombok Principal Mountain is the 3726-m Rinjani Mountain, third highest in Indonesia. Still active, it lasts erupted in 1901, 1994 and 2004. This Mountain plays an important role in Sasak tradition. Both the Sasak and Balinese people have a yearly pilgrimage to the Rinjani’s summit, which has several sulfuric lakes with curative virtues.

Lombok island geographically is almost the same size as Bali and, Lombok offers a variety of destinations to suit different holidaymakers’ tastes. 
Tropical climate with warm and humid weather all year round. Temperature range from 21 Celsius to 32 Celsius. Wet season starts from November to May and dry season start from May-October. Even though Nowadays the weather hard to be predicted, however the sun constant shining.

The best time to come is in the month of May when the weather is just perfect with bright daylight and green scenery.

People & Religion
The local inhabitants of Lombok are called Sasaks who make up 70% of the population are the predominant group with Balinese, Chinese, Arabian, and Javanese and other ethnics groups making up the rest. Bahasa Indonesia is the National Language, but English is widely spoken.

Lombok has three main districts with three capital cities: Mataram in the west, Praya in central and Selong in east Lombok. The majority of commerce is in the capital city of Mataram in west Lombok.

Moslem is the majority religion, but all other religions are practiced freely.

It is very important to dress nicely to wear slacks or knee length shorts if you plan to go around the island, a shirt with sleeves or a sarong. If you happened to have vacation in Lombok during Ramadan, the fasting month, please do not to eat, drink or smoke out in the open public during this month long fast. Even though the people don’t seem bothered in the common tourist areas like, Senggigi and the Gili islands, it is better to respect the people and not eat or smoke openly.

Wetu Telu
 is a unique type of moslem in Lombok which blends betwen Islam – Animism and can only be found in north Lombok. It roots stem from the village of Bayan in the north. The people who practice this still consider themselves Muslims but they have their own rituals in addition to the normal Muslim ones.
